General Knowledge Modules

Stability (GK010)

Description

This module breaks down the principles and practical application of vessel stability. It is designed to give you a clear and practical understanding of how a vessel’s stability is assessed, maintained and affected by loading, ballasting, damage, free surface effect and changes in displacement, trim and draught.

It examines key stability concepts including centres of gravity and buoyancy, metacentric height, righting levers, GZ curves, statical and dynamical stability, angle of loll, list, trim, free surface effect, cargo loading, dry docking and damage stability. By the end of the module, you’ll be equipped with the knowledge to interpret stability information and explain how stability is managed safely in accordance with international standards and best practice.

Please note that while this module does include some formulas and calculations to benefit your understanding of the theory surrounding the subject, it is not intended to be used to pass the SQA Stability papers.
